Prairie Crocus
Pulsatilla patens
sipihkopiyak(Cree)
One of the first flowers to push through Alberta's frozen soil each spring — often blooming with snow still on the ground in March. Fuzzy, silky purple blooms signal the end of winter across grasslands and open woods. An essential early nectar source for pollinators. Do not pick wild plants — populations are declining due to habitat loss and the plant is slow to recover. A.k.a. Pasqueflower.

Growing & Cultivation
Best Planting Time
Fall sowing preferred; transplant seedlings young
Propagation
Start from nursery-sourced seed (never dig wild plants). Fresh seed sown in fall performs best — stored seed needs 60–90 days cold stratification. Slow and tricky; often 3–4 years to first bloom. Transplants poorly due to deep taproot.
Always verify plant identification with multiple sources before consuming any wild plant. This information is for educational purposes only.
