Common Spike-rush

Eleocharis palustris

A slender grass-like plant (actually a sedge) forming dense mats along pond edges, wet meadows, and ditches. Single pointed seed head atop thin 10–60 cm stems. Important stabilizer of shallow-water edges; food and cover for amphibians and waterfowl.
