Heart-leaved Alexander

Zizia aptera

A short-lived perennial with glossy heart-shaped basal leaves and flat-topped clusters of tiny bright-yellow flowers in late spring. Host plant for the Black Swallowtail butterfly caterpillar. Native to Alberta prairies, moist meadows, and open woodlands. Tolerates clay, rocky soils, and alkaline pH.
