Northern Starflower

Lysimachia borealis

A dainty boreal forest-floor perennial, formerly Trientalis borealis, reclassified into Lysimachia. Each plant produces a whorl of lance-shaped leaves topped with one or two pristine white seven-petaled 'stars' in late spring — unusual among flowers, which typically have petals in multiples of 4, 5, or 6. Spreads quietly by slender rhizomes to form colonies in shady acidic woods. Reaches northern Alberta at the western edge of its range.
