Usnea spp.
Pale greenish-grey hair-like lichens hanging in draped tresses from conifer branches in Alberta's montane and boreal forests. Several Usnea species are native; collectively called Old Man's Beard. Highly sensitive to air pollution — abundance is a reliable indicator of clean air. Historical medicinal use (usnic acid is mildly antibacterial), but harvest only fallen windfall.
