Populus deltoides
The giant cottonwood of Alberta's southern river valleys — the Oldman, Bow, Red Deer, and South Saskatchewan. Broad triangular leaves and thick furrowed bark on trees that can exceed 30 m tall and 2 m in diameter. Female trees release clouds of cotton-tufted seeds in early summer. Keystone riparian species, host to many insect and bird species.
