Prairie Sage

Artemisia frigida

mostospi(Cree)

Also called Fringed Sage or Pasture Sage. A low mat-forming silver-grey native of Alberta's dry prairie, with finely divided aromatic leaves that release a sweet-pungent fragrance when crushed. Used by Plains peoples in smudging and as a medicinal. Thrives in the driest, thinnest soils where little else grows. One of the four sacred medicines in many traditions.
