Named for its soft silver-grey catkins that emerge fuzzy like a kitten's paw before leaves appear in late winter. A classic sign of approaching spring across the parkland and boreal. Large shrub 2–4 m tall, with glossy dark green leaves above, pale-glaucous beneath. Important early nectar for emerging queen bumblebees.
