Cladonia rangiferina
The iconic pale-grey branching ground lichen that carpets vast areas of Alberta's northern boreal and subarctic open pine forests and muskeg edges. Primary winter food of caribou — the animal moves the snow aside to reach it. Extremely slow-growing (3–5 mm per year). Never collect in quantity; it takes decades to recover.
