Trembling Aspen
Populus tremuloides
mitos(Cree)
The most widely distributed tree in North America and the backbone of Alberta's Parkland. Smooth pale-green bark turns chalky white with age; round leaves flutter on flattened petioles — the classic 'trembling.' Aspen stands are often a single clonal organism connected by roots; one Colorado clone (Pando) is considered among the world's largest living things. Gold fall colour is unforgettable. Vigorous root suckers can be a problem near gardens.
