Western Larch

Larix occidentalis

A second deciduous conifer alongside Tamarack, just reaching Alberta's SW corner in the Crowsnest region. Unlike Tamarack, Western Larch grows on dry mountain slopes rather than bogs. Soft golden-yellow fall needles are spectacular in October. Long-lived (up to 900 years) and exceptionally fire-resistant once mature β€” thick corky bark survives surface fires.
