Wild Red Raspberry

Rubus idaeus subsp. strigosus

ayoskan(Plains Cree)

Native Alberta raspberry — parent species of commercial red raspberries (along with the European subspecies). Thorny canes 1–2 m tall, white flowers, and the familiar red raspberry in late summer. Colonizes disturbed ground, forest edges, and burn sites vigorously via rhizomes. Fruit flavour rivals any cultivated berry.

Propagation

Rhizome suckers (dig and transplant in spring). Also tip-rooting — arching canes root where they touch soil. Seed after 90 days cold stratification.
