Early Blue Violet

Viola adunca

A low-growing native violet of dry meadows, open woods, and sandy soils across Alberta. Small blue-purple flowers with a white throat and a short backward spur. Among the first violets to bloom each spring. Host plant for native fritillary butterfly caterpillars β€” planting it is direct support for declining butterfly populations.
