Hard-stem Bulrush

Schoenoplectus acutus

A tall round-stemmed rush (not actually a 'rush' — it's in the sedge family) reaching 2–3 m in Alberta's ponds, shallow lakes, and slow streams. Dark brown tufted flower clusters. Traditionally used by Indigenous peoples for mats, baskets, and canoe caulking. Critical nesting habitat for waterfowl.
