Hylocomium splendens
Also called Mountain Fern Moss — one of the most abundant and recognizable mosses of Alberta's boreal and mountain conifer forests. Each year's growth produces a new frond-like layer resembling a fern, stacked atop previous years in a distinctive 'staircase.' You can age a shoot by counting the step-like branches. Forms deep lush carpets that define the character of mossy boreal understory.
