Lily of the Valley

Lily of the Valley

Convallaria majalis

A European woodland groundcover widely planted in Alberta gardens and naturalized in shaded corners across Edmonton. Arching stems of intensely fragrant, nodding white bell-flowers in spring give way to small red berries by late summer. Spreads aggressively by rhizome — excellent shade groundcover but can crowd out neighbours. Every part is highly toxic: contains cardiac glycosides that can cause serious harm to pets, livestock, and humans.
